Former WEC welterweight champion Carlos Condit has lost back-to-back fights for the first time in nearly seven years, yet somehow still remains near the top of the UFC’s 170-pound division.
In an interview with Bloody Elbow’s Steph Daniels, “The Natural Killer” expressed his thoughts on how UFC 158 played out, including an interesting evaluation of current divisional title holder Georges St-Pierre’s title fight against Nick Diaz.
“It went very much as I expected it to go. It was a little bit lackluster, nothing to write home about. Georges is very good at what he does, but a lot of his fights aren't really very exciting.”
The victory marked GSP’s sixth unanimous decision win in a row, though it also set him the UFC record for welterweight title defense (eight). The bout also marked “Rush’s” 11 win in a row.
Condit came up short against the champ at UFC 154 in November, though he gave the Tristar Gym standout a scare when he dropped him with a head kick in the third round.
Also a former UFC interim welterweight champ, Condit believes he could have beat St-Pierre if he fought him the way he fought Johny Hendricks, who he lost a close decision to at UFC 158.
“I fought the fight against Hendricks that I wish I had fought against GSP, honestly, with the stand-ups and the striking and everything. You know what? With Georges, you've got to get in there and do what you have to do to win. I don't care how you win.”
Despite the recent stretch of tough luck, Condit remains ranked number two in the UFC’s official welterweight rankings and has won five “Fight Night” bonuses in his past six fights.
Condit has targeted a rematch with GSP’s teammate, Rory MacDonald, as his next fight. “Ares” was set to rematch Condit, who he lost to at UFC 115 in June 2010, at UFC 158, but withdrew from the bout due to a neck/back strain.
