Former WEC welterweight champ Carlos Condit gets to prove he is still a top fighter at 170-pounds when he takes on a red-hot Johny Hendricks in the co-main event of UFC 158 this Saturday.
“Big Rigg” is currently riding a five-fight win streak, including three spectacular “Knockout of the Night” performances in that roughly two-year span.
In an interview with Bleacher Report, Condit explains that Hendricks, a former four-time Division I All-American wrestler in college, is a lot like a younger, smaller version of light heavyweight contender Dan Henderson.
“There are some similarities there but I think the difference is Hendo is towards the end of his career, he's not as versatile as he used to be. Ultimately he kind of is a one-trick pony,” Condit said.
“Hendricks, he does have that in his arsenal, but he has a lot of other things. He's still athletic, he still moves really well. He's a more dangerous version of the one-punch, KO wrestler that Hendo is."
Condit is coming off of a failed title bid against the UFC’s welterweight top dog Georges St-Pierre at UFC 154.
Despite losing via unanimous decision, “The Natural Born Killer” dropped GSP in the third round with a head kick and showed precise, powerful striking throughout the fight.
The Greg Jackson’s MMA product earned “Fight of the Night” honors for his efforts and MMAValor.com said St-Pierre vs. Condit was the “Fight of the Year” for 2012.
Prior to the loss, Condit had won five straight, including three knockouts. One of those finishes was a TKO over St-Pierre’s Tri-Star training partner, Rory MacDonald, at UFC 115 in June 2010.
Condit was originally scheduled to rematch MacDonald at UFC 158, but a neck/back strain forced “Ares” off the card and Hendricks stepped in as a replacement.
