Two of the most violent strikers in the UFC’s welterweight division are set to do battle at the end of the year in a matchup that has “instant classic” written all over it.
Former UFC interim welterweight champ Carlos Condit is set to face off with surging contender Matt Brown at UFC on FOX 9, set for December 14 in Sacramento California. FOX Sports reported the bout on Wednesday.
After losing back-to-back fights to titleholder Georges St-Pierre and top contender Johny Hendricks, Condit rebounded scoring a vicious fourth round knockout over Martin Kampmann at UFC Fight Night 27 late last month.
The victory avenged “The Natural Born Killer’s” split decision loss to Kampmann at UFC Fight Night 18 in April 2009.
Meanwhile, Brown has been one of the company’s biggest surprises since Feb. 2012, rattling off six straight victories (five knockouts), including a highlight-reel worth 29-second stoppage of Mike Pyle at UFC Fight Night 27 a month ago.
“The Immortal” is tied with Hendricks for the second best active win streak among UFC welterweights (six), behind only St-Pierre (11).
While Brown has went on the record several times in the past few months claiming to be the worst possible matchup for GSP, it looks like he will have to get through Condit, also a former WEC titleholder, before he gets a shot at the gold.
The free mid-December card is stacked with high profile bouts, including a flyweight scrap between Scott Jorgensen and Ian McCall, a pivotal featherweight bout between Chad Mendes and Nik Lentz and an intriguing 135-pound clash between Urijah Faber and Michael McDonald.
The event is headlined by a lightweight title fight between Anthony Pettis and Josh Thomson.
