Few welterweight contenders have the fight credentials, star power and fan support of Carlos Condit, so it should come as little surprise he will get another crack at UFC gold with a victory at UFC 171 on Saturday.
UFC on FOX’s official Twitter page announced the news on Tuesday.
“Carlos Condit has been told by the UFC if he wins at UFC 171, he will get the next shot at the welterweight title #UFC171,” the tweet says.
Condit, 1-2 in his past three fights, squares off with former Strikeforce title challenger Tyron Woodley in the co-main event of the evening.
To put things into perspective, “The Natural Born Killer’s” only losses since April 2009 came against longtime UFC champ Georges St-Pierre and top contender Johny Hendricks.
His overall record in that roughly five-year span is 6-3, most recently avenging a loss to Martin Kampmann at UFC Fight Night 27 in August.
Woodley enters the bout with a 2-2 record in his past four fights, suffering tough loss to Nate Marquardt and Jake Shields and scoring blistering knockouts over Jay Hieron and Josh Koscheck.
The new UFC welterweight champion will be crowned when Hendricks battles Robbie Lawler in the evening’s main event.
St-Pierre opted to vacate the belt and take a hiatus from the sport in December following a controversial decision win over Hendricks at UFC 167.
The UFC has not shown their hand on what would happen if Woodley pulls off the upset against Condit.
