Chael Sonnen on Failed Drug Tests: ‘I Thought I Could Have My Cake and Eat it Too’

Former three-time UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen has been uncharacteristically quiet ever since he was suspended for two years by the Nevada State Athletic Commission at last month’s hearing.

However, on WWE superstar Chris Jericho’s “Talk is Jericho” podcast, “The American Gangster” finally admitted wrongdoing for his two failed random drug tests conducted in May and June, respectfully (transcription per MMA Fighting).

“I didn't think I'd be tested for another 44 days," Sonnen said of the random, pre-fight drug tests for which he was caught. "I tried to game the system,” Sonnen said.

“I knew what I was doing I thought I could have my cake and eat it too. I can take this, I can feel great, they make me feel good, and that's one of the problems I have. They go ‘these are performance enhancers.' I go, 'guys, why else am I taking it?’”

Sonnen, an open user of testosterone replacement therapy before the NSAC banned the treatment in February, failed his first drug test in May for the anti-estrogenic drugs anastrozole and clomiphene.

While the silver-tongued Sonnen initially defended the drug usage as a standard way to taper off of TRT, his argument quickly went out the window when the results of his June drug test were revealed.

This time, he failed for the performance-enhancing drugs human growth hormone (HGH) and erythropoietin (EPO): both commonly used to enhance strength and endurance in athletes.

The second failed test cost Sonnen his desk job with FOX Sports, which he was fired from at the end of June.
