Three-time UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen has never been shy to step up on short notice, willing to fight the likes of UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, Mauricio Rua and now Daniel Cormier on just days notice.
While some fight fans don’t understand “The American Gangster’s” propensity to fight elite competition on little to no notice, Sonnen told FOX Sports’ Marc Raimondi that the answer is actually pretty simple.
“DC is a top contender,” Sonnen said in a text message. “For people to not jump at the shot to fight him is more than confusing, it’s infuriating.”
“The UFC is plagued with cowards. If you are a light heavyweight who isn’t booked and you didn’t offer to fight him, please, I beg you, quit.”
According to the UFC’s official rankings, Sonnen is the no. 8 light heavyweight in the world, while Cormier holds down the no. 4 spot at heavyweight.
However, Cormier was scheduled to make his debut at 205 pounds at UFC 170 next weekend against former champion Rashad Evans.
Unfortunately, that bout was scrapped as “Suga” suffered a fairly serious leg injury this week that will require surgery.
In his first interview with Bloody Elbow after hearing the news, Cormier expressed an interest fighting Sonnen and the fellow FOX broadcast analyst seemed to be for the idea based on his reaction on Twitter.
“@dc_mma ya know I haven't been crazy about you attitude as of late. Daddy ain't ready, but he's ready enough. Feb 22 just say my name...,” Sonnen wrote.
Newly resigned fighter Anthony Johnson, who’s already booked to fight Phil Davis at UFC 172 in April, and relatively unknown Patrick Cummins both also threw their hat in the ring.
Despite being just 4-0 and having never competed in a major organization, the UFC went with Cummins as a replacement, given that he was a former training partner of Cormier and claims to have beaten him into tears behind closed doors.
Does Sonnen make a valid point or is it borderline irresponsible to accept a fight against a top-tier opponent on days notice?
