Chael Sonnen vs. Wanderlei Silva Likely for Las Vegas Venue in July

One of the UFC’s most heavily hyped grudge matches in years finally has a tentative location and time frame.

Former three-time UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen is expected to meet arch nemesis Wanderlei Silva at a pay-per-view event in July, MMA Junkie reported on Thursday.

Here’s what UFC President Dana White had to say about an eventual showdown between the two head coaches of season 3 of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil.

“It’s May or July. I think it’s going to be May, which means it will be July now that I said that. I don’t know. One of them,” White said during a pre-fight press conference for UFC 169.

Sonnen seems to believe that July is the more likely month for the grudge match, according to a tweet he sent out about two weeks ago, asking his fans to help “keep him (Silva) relevant until July.”

While the event has not officially announced, the annual Independence Day weekend card will likely take place on July 5 and be earmarked UFC 175.

Just last week, White confirmed that Sonnen and “The Axe Murderer” got in a physical confrontation while filming TUF: Brazil 3, with an impromptu fight taking place before representatives from both teams broke it up.

White expressed that he’d like to see Sonnen vs. Silva co-headlined a middleweight title bout between champ Chris Weidman and challenger Vitor Belfort, but has noted that Weidman would prefer to fight on the Memorial Day weekend card so he can have the summer off to spend with his family.

“The American Gangster” and Silva have been feuding for over two years and it looks like they will now finally me able to settle their differences by the middle of this year.
