Upcoming UFC featherweight title challenger Chan-Sung Jung won’t necessarily become a wealthy man if he pulls off a massive upset over divisional champion Jose Aldo at UFC 163 next week.
Even with a victory over the heavily-favored “Scarface,” Jung could only receive a $40,000 payday, according to an interview with Cormma.com.
When asked about how much he was set to make at the August 3 pay-per-view, “The Korean Zombie” said he will make $20,000 to show and would earn an additional $20,000 if he wins.
Of course, Jung is still eligible for any of the three traditional fight bonuses that are awarded at each UFC event: “Fight of the Night,” “Knockout of the Night” and “Submission of the Night,” which are worth an extra $50,000 each.
While Aldo’s fight purse is yet to be revealed, the situation sounds reminiscent of when Anderson Silva fought Chris Weidman just over two weeks ago at UFC 162.
Silva earned a whopping $600,000 just to show, while Weidman only took home $98,000 on the books.
“The All-American” received $24,000 to show, $24,000 to win and also earned “Knockout of the Night” honors for being the first fighter to KO Silva in his 38 professional fights.
In all fairness, Silva entered the bout a perfect 16-0 inside the Octagon and was the longest reigning champion in UFC history.
Weidman’s championship win was just his sixth with the company and also noted in subsequent interviews that he was negotiating a new contract following the monumental win.
Conversely, Jung enters his title bout with a perfect 3-0 record inside the Octagon, while Aldo has won an incredible 15 fights of a row, four of which took place under the UFC banner.
At his last fight against Frankie Edgar at UFC 156 in February, Aldo took home a hefty $240,000 paycheck. $120,000 was awarded to show and another $120,000 was handed out for out-pointing his American counterpart in the main event of the evening.
