Chan Sung Jung Taking 2-Year Hiatus From MMA for Mandatory Military Service

Former UFC featherweight title challenger Chan Sung Jung hasn’t competed in 13 months and looks like he’ll be out of action for at least another two years.

However, his situation is quite unique for a professional mixed martial artist: “The Korean Zombie” has to fulfill his South Korean military service requirement.

Jung, 27, broke the news via a Facebook post written in Korean on Monday and MMA Fighting later elaborated on the situation.

"He feels bad for his fans and thankful to the UFC, Dana and the Ferttitas for letting him be a professional fighter," said Brian Rhee, Jung’s manager.

"He's going to rehab, train and comeback stronger than ever after the end of the 2 years!"

Jung’s last bout was a championship bout where he came up short against Jose Aldo at UFC 163 in August of last year, unable to overcome a separated shoulder he suffered late in the third round.

Prior to the matchup, Jung had established himself as one of the promotion’s most exciting fighters.

In his previous three bouts, Jung racked up four post-fight bonuses (two “Submission of the Night,” one “Knockout of the Night” and one “Fight of the Night”) for his victories over Leonard Garcia, Mark Hominick and Dustin Poirier.

His submission of Garcia at UFC Fight Night 24 in March 2011 was the one and only twister finish in UFC history and his seven-second KO of Hominick is tied for the fastest finish ever inside the Octagon.

Furthermore, his back-and-forth war with Poirier at UFC on FUEL 3 in May 2012 received “Fight of the Year” honors from various MMA media outlets.
