Chris Weidman: ‘TRT Doesn’t Belong in Our Sport … Or Any Other Sport’

UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman is facing ex-light heavyweight titleholder Vitor Belfort at UFC 173 in May and not surprisingly, he isn’t thrilled with “The Phenom’s” recent usage of testosterone replacement therapy.

Speaking with MMA Junkie, “The All-American” made his stance on the controversial treatment abundantly clear.

“TRT doesn't belong in our sport, or I don't think it belongs in any sport,” Weidman said.

“Age and experience is very important. And when you're able to have experience and also the testosterone level of a sixteen year old kid, and the recover rate, strength, everything that goes along with that, it becomes unfair.”

Belfort has been heavily criticized for his usage of TRT due to fighting outside the United States for his past five fights, spanning over a little less than two years.

All of those fights have been contested either in Canada or Belfort’s homeland of Brazil.

Most recently, the Brazilian slugger has undergone a serious career resurgence, scoring three straight knockouts over notable contenders in Michael Bisping, Luke Rockhold and Dan Henderson.

The knockout specialist faces a unique challenge in the undefeated (11-0) Weidman, who is a former Division I All-American wrestler with a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Despite serious grappling credentials, the 29-year-old New Yorker has won five of his fights (including three straight) by KO.

UFC 173 takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 24.
