UFC fighter Ronaldo Souza is the unsung hero at middleweight, the No. 2 ranked competitor in the division riding a seven-fight win streak.
Despite having the hot hand recently, Souza is awaiting a dance partner and will have to wait until 2015 before he gets a crack at championship gold – since champion Chris Weidman doesn’t defend his belt against Vitor Belfort until February.
In that case, his coach, Josuel Distak, believes the UFC should book “a special light heavyweight fight” between “Jacare” and former PRIDE/Strikeforce titleholder Dan Henderson on the same card as Weidman vs. Belfort, per Sherdog.
“I believe Jacare already proved that he deserves a shot at the middleweight title,” said Distak, “but once he’s recovered from this second elbows surgery in January, it’s the same time as Chris and Belfort, so what can we do? I like the idea of putting Jacare in a special light heavyweight fight.”
“Jacare already fought in open-weight matches during his jiu-jitsu career. I would love to see him facing [Dan] Henderson in February, on the same card that Belfort will face Weidman. Henderson is a legend and the fans would love to see that matchup.”
Henderson, 44, is a once-unthinkable 1-4 in his past five fights, most recently getting completely outclassed by Daniel Cormier at UFC 173 by top contender Daniel Cormier.
The 42-fight veteran and former Olympian has previously expressed an interest in returning to the Octagon in February, stating he would compete at either 185 or 205 pounds.
Would a light heavyweight scrap between Souza and Henderson make sense at this point in their respective careers?
