Conor McGregor: I’ll Challenge for the Lightweight Belt after I Win Featherweight Title

UFC featherweight contender Conor McGregor is so confident that he’ll capture the 145-pound championship next year he’s already mapping out a contingency plan to win the lightweight strap.

Speaking with Sever MMA, “The Notorious” explained that it won’t be long before he is a once again reigning supreme at both featherweight and lightweight.

"My next fight is most likely going to be for the title. After that there will be no catching me. I'll win the belt, maybe I'll defend it in the Aviva and then I'll challenge for the lightweight belt, then who knows?” McGregor said.

“If a 155 fight came up I will take it. I'm only gone 26, I'm not going to be making featherweight my whole career, it's a tough cut. I do it and I do it professionally, but it's tough."

The Irish superstar is currently riding a 12-fight win streak, including a 4-0 mark inside the Octagon – most recently making short work of perennial contender Dustin Poirier at UFC 178 last month.

UFC President Dana White recently stated that McGregor could be the next in line for a shot at UFC gold at 145 pounds, so it is feasible the dangerous striker challenges the winner of Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes II, which takes place at UFC 179, early next year.

While McGregor hasn’t fought at lightweight since December 2012, his KO over Ivan Buchinger earned him the Cage Warriors Fighting Championship lightweight title.

He was already the featherweight champ at the time, making him a rare dual-titleholder.
