Dan Henderson Approved for Final TRT Exemption in Brazil for Shogun Rematch

Former Strikeforce and Pride champion Dan Henderson will receive the last therapeutic usage exemption issued in Brazil for his March 23 rematch with Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.

In light of the Nevada State Athletic Commission banning the controversial medical treatment on Thursday, the Comissao Atletica Brasileira de MMA (Brazilian Athletic Commission of MMA) announced shortly thereafter they will follow suit.

However, since he had already been approved by the commission for his bout scheduled for later this month, “Hendo’s” exemption will be honored. MMA Fighting reported the news on Friday.

Henderson, who is 43 years old, has lost his past three fights under the UFC banner, including most recently getting knocked out for the first time by Vitor Belfort at UFC Fight Night 32 in November.

Coincidentally, the last time the Team Quest co-founder had his hand raised was when he had a five-round war with Rua at UFC 139 in November 2011.

Henderson won the action-packed affair via a closely contested unanimous decision, though a fair number of fans and analysts believed the bout should’ve been scored a draw.

Rua, 32, seemed to be on a decline of his own after two straight lopsided losses to Alexander Gustafsson and Chael Sonnen, but still delivered a vintage knockout over James Te Huna at UFC Fight Night 33 in December.

After posting a dominant 12-1 mark inside the Pride ring, the Brazilian slugger has had mixed results inside the Octagon, with just a 6-6 record to fall back on.

A lopsided loss for either fighter could spell the end of their time on the UFC roster.

Henderson vs. Rua II headlines UFC Fight Night 38, which takes place at the Ginasio Nelio Dias arena in Natal, Brazil.
