Dan Henderson Will Return to Middleweight, Wants Fight By End of the Year

After compiling a paltry 2-4 record since returning to the Octagon in November 2011, former PRIDE and Strikeforce champion Dan Henderson is returning to 185 pounds.

“Hendo’s” Muay Thai coach, Daniel Woirion, told MMA Fighting of the decision on Tuesday, also noting that the Team Quest co-founder hopes to have a fight booked before the end of 2014.

While he has generally faired better at middleweight than at light heavyweight, Henderson is actually just 3-3 in his past six contests at 185 pounds.

In fairness, the losses where to very admirable competition in the form of then-UFC champs Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Anderson Silva, as well as then-Strikeforce titleholder Jake Shields.

Henderson, 43, has only fought at 205 pounds since returning to the UFC and both victories came against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.

Their UFC 139 encounter was a consensus pick for 2011’s “Fight of the Year,” while their rematch in March was equally entertaining and even had a spectacular come-from-behind knockout by Henderson.

However, the MMA legend had little to offer Rashad Evans, Lyoto Machida, Vitor Belfort and, most recently, was flat out embarrassed by top contender Daniel Cormier at UFC 173 last month.

Henderson has always been small for light heavyweight, but weighed in at an unheard of 199 pounds for his May encounter with Cormier.

Will Henderson be able to return to vintage form by switching weight classes again or are the wily veteran’s best days clearly behind him at this point?
