Top ranked UFC women’s bantamweight contender Cat Zingano hasn’t lost her spot in the rankings despite 13 months on the sidelines, but her boss says it’s now unlikely she will fight for the title in her return bout.
UFC President Dana White explained his stance on the situation at the UFC 173 pre-fight media press conference on Friday, per Bloody Elbow.
"She is No. 1. She'll probably have to take another fight before that. She'll probably have to take a fight. She's got to make some money. She's got to get back and let people see her again," White said.
Zingano, who boasts a perfect 8-0 record (seven finishes) inside the cage, defeated Miesha Tate at The Ultimate Fighter Season 17 Finale last April, but she suffered an ACL tear shortly thereafter and has been rehabbing the injury ever since.
Earlier this year, Zingano’s husband Mauricio committed suicide, so it has been a tough a really tough year or so for the 31-year-old Brazilian jiu-jitsu purple belt.
The UFC women’s bantamweight champion, Ronda Rousey, is also undefeated (9-0, all finishes) and defends her belt against Alexis Davis at UFC 175 on July 5.
The matchup marks her third title defense in about six-and-a-half months, an unprecedented feat in modern mixed martial arts.
Did Zingano get the short end of the stick in this situation or White making the right call?
