Despite the fact that UFC light heavyweight Jon Jones has been booked to defend his title against Vitor Belfort at UFC 152 for nearly three weeks, two-time middleweight title contender Chael Sonnen insists he will be the man standing across “Bones” on Sept. 22.
UFC President Dana White gave MMA Junkie the details in an interview Friday afternoon.
"Chael Sonnen is in full training camp right now," White said. "He's been training since he got offered the Jones fight. He said, 'I'm in full camp right now because Vitor will get hurt and pull out, and it will be Jones vs. Sonnen, anyway."
For a brief few hours, Sonnen vs. Jones appeared to be the headlining bout for UFC 151, with “The American Gangster” stepping up to the plate for his injured friend Dan Henderson.
However, after the advisory of his head trainer, Greg Jackson, Jones decided to decline such a “dangerous” opponent on short notice. With the main event scrapped, the UFC decided to cancel the event entirely.
Jones vs. Lyoto Machida, a rematch from UFC 140, seemed academic for UFC 152, but “The Dragon” decided he wanted no part of Jones on short notice. That’s when “The Phenom” came to the rescue.
Belfort has not fought at light heavyweight in five years, making him an unexpected solution to the problem and questioned the UFC’s depth at 205-pounds
Since 2010, Belfort has had several bouts postponed, or cancelled altogether, due to injuries. Obviously, Sonnen is expecting history to repeat itself just eight days out from the event, which takes place at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
What bout is more intriguing to headline UFC 152: Jones vs. Sonnen or Jones vs. Belfort?
