Despite recently calling out UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones on several occasions, Chael Sonnen will not get a fast track to a 205-pound title showdown.
"He's a long way away," UFC President Dana White said about Sonnen during an appearance on “The Dave and Mahoney” morning show on Las Vegas’ KXTE X107.5 FM.
"He's not coming off the (Anderson) Silva fight and just talking his way into a 205-pound world title shot."
Sonnen is involved in an ongoing Twitter war with “Bones” and also said he could take the 25-year-old’s title “the same as I could take his candy on Halloween” when he co-hosted FUEL TV’s “UFC Tonight” last week.
Of course, there are pundits that believe Sonnen is spitting verbal venom at the young champion to simply throw him off his game for his UFC 151 title fight against Dan Henderson. “Hendo” is a long-time friend and training partner of Sonnen.
Whatever Sonnen’s reasoning may be, White remained firm that Sonnen will have to show where he belongs among the division’s top 5 before he is in the light heavyweight title discussion.
"[Sonnen] is going to have to beat a couple of the best of the world," White said. "If he beats Forrest Griffin, we'll shoot him right into the Top 5 and let him fight some of those guys there, and we'll see what happens."
Sonnen is 2-2 in his past four fights, with both his losses coming at the hands of UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva. After Silva gave Sonnen the first legitimate knockout loss of his career at UFC 148 (he previously had two cut TKOs on his record), “The American Gangster” teased a return to the light heavyweight division.
He eventually made the commitment, announcing last week he would be fighting Forrest Griffin at UFC 155, scheduled for Dec. 29. This is a rematch from their early careers on the independent circuit, where Griffin submitted Sonnen with a triangle choke in the first round.
Lyoto Machida earned another shot at the light heavyweight title after a masterful second round knockout of Ryan Bader at UFC on FOX 4, White said after the event ended.
Machida recently fought Jones at UFC 140, getting put to sleep with a guillotine choke in the second round.
Is Sonnen the last big name for Jones to fight at light heavyweight or are there plenty of compelling bouts left for Bones at 205-pounds?
