Dana White: Jon Jones Not Interested in Gustafsson, Wants Cormier Instead

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has really only had to overcome adversity inside the cage against one opponent – Alexander Gustafsson - and he isn’t willing to do a part II, according to UFC President Dana White.

White clarified that “Bones” is not actually in contract negotiations and is actually balking at signing a rematch with "The Mauler,” according to an article on UFC.com posted last night.

"Just to clear up a couple things, people think we're in contract negotiations with Jon Jones - we're not. Jon Jones still has five fights left on his contract," White stated.

"So what we're doing right now is trying to get him to sign the bout agreement for Gustafsson. He doesn't want to fight Gustafsson. ... Lorenzo and I have a meeting with Jones on Thursday to get him to sign the bout agreement, and he's asking to fight Cormier instead."

Gustafsson and Jones competed in a five-round classic at UFC 165 in September, with each fighter bloodied and battered after their 25-minute back-and-forth war.

While many pundits thought Gustafsson did enough to unseat Jones, the judges saw it otherwise and gave the champ a close decision win – setting the UFC record with his sixth consecutive light heavyweight title defense.

Meanwhile, Cormier improved to 15-0 as a professional mixed martial artist after he choked former PRIDE and Strikeforce champ Dan Henderson unconscious at UFC 173 last Saturday.

Cormier told Sports World News on Sunday that he was up for fighting Gustafsson for an interim title at 205 pounds if Jones was going to wait out what was then thought to be contract negotiations.

White said this scenario could be plausible if Jones remains adamant that he won’t rematch Gustafsson.
