As epic of a heavyweight fight as Mark Hunt vs. Antonio Silva was at UFC Fight Night 33 on Saturday, UFC President Dana White says it may have only been a one-shot deal.
In an interview with Canadian media outlet Sportsnet, White gushed how much he loved the 25-minute slugfest – however, he says Hunt’s injuries from the bout will keep him out of action far longer than “Bigfoot” will be.
"Every morning when I open my eyes, the first thing I think about is Mark Hunt and Antonio Silva. THE sickest heavyweight fight that I have ever seen. I was jumping around the room like a little kid during that fight,” White recalled.
“… In that fight, Hunt broke his hand in two places, so he's gonna be out for awhile. No, there won't be an immediate rematch. I'm assuming Silva is gonna want to fight again before Hunt is back."
While Hunt vs. Silva ended in a draw, it was one of the rare instances where the overwhelming majority of fight fans couldn’t have been happier with the result.
The two hard-hitting heavyweights contested most of their 25-minute battle on the feet, crushing one another with big shot after big shot, with both men refusing to back down.
With that being said, it seemed that the only just thing to happen was for both 260-plus pound behemoth’s to have their hand raised.
In all likelihood, neither “The Super Samoan” or Silva will ever compete for a major title again, but as long as they continue to fight with the heart and skill they displayed last week, no one is going to mind seeing either man walk out to the Octagon.
