Dana White Open to Gunnar Nelson vs. Rory MacDonald Next

Undefeated Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Gunnar Nelson improved to 13-0-1 at UFC Fight Night 46, putting another inferior opponent away via submission.

Now, “Gunni” is calling for a top ranked opponent and UFC President Dana White isn’t opposed to have him face No. 2 ranked Rory MacDonald in his next Octagon outing.

Here’s what the UFC’s head honcho said at the UFC Fight Night 46 post-fight press conference, per MMA Mania:

"Let me talk to the guys and see what they think,” White said.

“What I don't like is you see these guys who are talented, super-talented but don't have the big-fight experience yet, taking these big jumps up. But we'll see what happens. Let me talk to his people, and talk to him, and really see what we want to do here."

Nelson entered Saturday’s fight as the No. 13 welterweight in the world, according to the UFC’s official rankings, and is yet to encounter a ranked opponent inside the Octagon.

The Icelandic prospect has established himself as one of the UFC’s best kept secrets, but it remains to be seen if he can hang with the elite class at 170 pounds.

After suffering a setback to recent title challenger Robbie Lawler at UFC 167 in November, “Ares” has rebounded with back-to-back victories over Demian Maia and Tyron Woodley.

Is Nelson ready for an upper-tier opponent or does he still have a ways to go before he gets a premiere welterweight matchup?
