UFC heavyweight Roy Nelson thought it would be a good idea to apply for the vacant Executive Director position at the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
His boss, UFC President Dana White, adamantly disagrees.
“Big Country” told Bloody Elbow why he put himself into consideration to succeed the sometimes controversial Keith Kizer:
“I have put my application in. My wife and I were talking about having something besides fighting to fall back on, and I think I would be able to do some good,” Nelson said.
“This is my hometown, it's where I was born and raised, so I feel it's a way for me to help further the sport.”
White told MMA Weekly’s Erik Fontanez, “What a f***ing idiot," in regards to Nelson applying for the supervisory position on the NSAC.
He also added that Roy couldn't get a job at Kinkos.
Nelson, ranked the no. 11 heavyweight in the world in the UFC’s official rankings, has knocked on the door of title contention several times in his 28-fight career.
However, he most recently suffered back-to-back losses to contenders Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier, with losses to Fabricio Werdum, Junior dos Santos and Frank Mir also on his ledger.
Nelson’s best stretch inside the Octagon came between May 2012 and April 2013, when he scored three straight knockouts over the likes of Dave Herman, Matt Mitrione and Cheick Kongo.
Would the colorful Nelson be exactly what the NSAC needs to keep them in check or is the portly power puncher vastly under qualified for such a position?
