Dana White: There Won’t Be Interim Lightweight or Heavyweight Titles

As UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis, as well as his heavyweight counterpart Cain Velasquez, recovers from injuries requiring surgeries, don’t expect either division to introduce an interim title.

UFC President said as much at the UFC on FOX 9 post-fight press conference on Saturday:

“We know when Cain’s coming back; we know when Anthony Pettis is coming back,” White told the media on hand. “We do [interim titles] when we don’t know when somebody’s going to come back or what’s going on.”

Pettis was set to headline UFC on FOX 9 against former Strikeforce champ Josh Thomson, but a knee injury forced him off the card about a month ago.

As a result of the torn PCL requiring surgery, “Showtime” is expected to be out of action until at least mid-2014.

Coming off a career-defining TKO victory over Junior dos Santos at UFC 166 in October, Velasquez was expected to battle submission ace Fabricio Werdum during the first quarter of 2014.

However, a nagging shoulder injury forced the Mexican-American superstar to go under the knife just days ago, which is expected to keep him on the shelf until the end of next year.

Did White make the right call in deciding the keep these two weight classes moving right along with the titleholders unavailable to fight for a while or would both divisions have benefited from an interim champ?
