Former UFC welterweight title challenger Nick Diaz may not be dusting off the gloves as soon as some of us expected.
On Thursday, UFC President Dana White shot down a report on BJPenn.com where Cesar Gracie, Diaz’s head trainer/manager, was quoted as saying the Stockton bad boy was offered a fresh fight inside the Octagon.
Ariel Helwani reported that when he texted White about a potential Diaz return, White responded by writing “"Nobody at the UFC talked to Gracie or anyone else that reps Nick."
Helwani also noted that when he texted Gracie on Wednesday asking who the UFC offered Diaz, he texted back “Can’t tell you.”
The drama continues to unfold though, as Cesar Gracie tweeted “Misquoted on @bjpenndotcom. No new contract or new bout agreement.”
BJPenn.com was quick to respond:
“@CesarGracieBJJ The UG misquoted our report and you blamed the wrong people Our report was accurate. You're a good guy, bad misunderstanding," the tweet says, with Gracie retweeting it.
Additionally, BJPenn.com posted a 30-second clip from when Gracie appeared on their radio show, defending their initial report.
“There is an offer on the table. That’s all I can say, and it’s something that everybody’s looking at … Dana has offered him a fight, there is an offer on the table, I can’t tell you who it is. It’s kind of neat, I think, though no decisions have been made for sure.”
Despite being just 29-years-old, Diaz retired after back-to-back losses to then interim UFC champ Carlos Condit and divisional titleholder Georges St-Pierre, coming up short against GSP at UFC 158 in March.
Since then, Diaz has started his own MMA promotion in his native Stockton, California, successfully hosting the promotion’s first 12-fight event last month.
Will Diaz ever step back inside the cage or has he truly had his fill of the fight game after 36 professional bouts?
