Upcoming Bellator lightweight title challenger David Rickels wants to make sure fans understand the difference between him and divisional champ Michael Chandler leading up to their July 31 title bout.
“Bellator have always been great to me, but I'm not the guy at the VMA awards being pretty as s--t. I'm not like the ‘pretty face guy,'” Rickels told MMA Fighting.com Bellator is like, ‘Man, we can't show his ugly mug on TV.'”
"The way that I picture it is just that this is my opportunity to punch this guy who gets to go to the VMA awards. I get to punch this guy in the face and elbow him."
Rickels got his shot at Bellator gold the old fashioned way, winning the Bellator Season 8 Lightweight Tournament, punctuated with a TKO over Saad Awad in the finals back in March.
“The Caveman” admits that the undefeated Chandler, a former All-American wrestler at the University of Missouri, doesn’t appear to have any glaring weaknesses in his game.
Of course, this is MMA and anything can happen.
"I don't see huge holes in his game. I just look to expose him during the fight, cut ‘em with an elbow, hit ‘em with a right hand, make something happen. I'm all about making it happen during the fight and finding a way," he said.
Rickels is known for his iron chin and being able to entice his opponents into a wild brawl, a situation he thrives in, and also has a pretty underrated jiu-jitsu game to boot.
Still, Chandler’s takedowns, ground-and-pound and top-heavy submission game are second to none at 155-pounds.
Will Rickels unorthodox style be too much for Chandler to handle or will the champion again prove that he’s a cut above the rest inside the Bellator cage?
