Despite Doubts, Chael Sonnen Receives Fight License for UFC Fight Night 26

Anyone who bought tickets to UFC Fight Night 26, the first UFC event to air on the FOX Sports 1 network, next Saturday can breathe easy about the main event.

As MMA Junkie first reported, Chael Sonnen remained an unlicensed fighter by the Massachusetts Athletic Commission as of Wednesday. The board scheduled a special meeting for Thursday afternoon to determine if Sonnen would compete or not.

“The American Gangster” had to first deal with the issue that the MAC had never given out a testosterone replacement therapy usage exemption before, which one labor union felt gave them grounds to file a complaint to the commission.

However, despite all the controversy, the three-time UFC title challenger was unanimously approved for his license. MMA Junkie was the first to confirm the approved licensed.

With that roadblock out of the way, Sonnen is clear to face former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio Rua at the TD Garden in Boston next Saturday.

Prior to the results of the commission meeting, UFC President Dana White tweeted that “he will fight” when asked if the union complaint would suddenly remove Sonnen from the card.

As it turns out, the company’s head honcho was right on the money.

Both Rua and Sonnen are coming off losses, as a matter of fact Sonnen has most recently lost back-to-back title bids to middleweight champ Anderson Silva and 205-pound titleholder Jon Jones, respectively.

Regardless of the result of this bout, Sonnen, one of the promotion’s biggest pay-per-view draws, has stated he will return to middleweight division afterwards.
