Two surging contenders in the UFC’s lightweight division will square off next month to determine who is knocking on the door for a title shot.
Former WEC title challenger Donald Cerrone will square off with ex-King of the Cage champion Bobby Green at UFC 178 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on September 27, the UFC announced on Thursday evening.
After dropping a decision to fellow contender Rafael dos Anjos at UFC Fight Night 27 one year ago, “Cowboy” has been on a tear – rattling off four straight victories inside the Octagon, all finishes.
His most recent win was a knockout victory over the usually durable Jim Miller at UFC Fight Night 45 last month.
Meanwhile, Green has been one of the UFC’s most pleasant surprises at 155 pounds.
Also boasting four wins in a row under the UFC banner, “King” is riding an eight-fight win streak dating back to his Strikeforce days.
Green most recently won a hotly contested split decision over former Strikeforce lightweight titleholder Josh Thomson at UFC on FOX 12 last month.
Cerrone was recently rumored to be fighting Bellator lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez at the September 27 pay-per-view, but it appears as though the UFC could not buyout “The Silent Assassin’s” Bellator contract in time for the bout to take place.
According to the UFC’s official rankings, Cerrone is the No. 4 lightweight in the world, while Green cracks the list at No. 7.
Given the recent track records of these two competitors, Cerrone vs. Green all but guarantees fireworks for fight fans.
