Ed Soares: Anderson Silva “Walks on That Tightrope of Taking Risks”

Following a devastating loss that snapped a 17-fight win streak, it would seem that former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva’s camp is in surprisingly good spirits.

Speaking on Ariel Helwani’s The MMA Hour Monday afternoon, Ed Soares, Silva’s manager, gave his take on Chris Weidman’s shocking knockout victory at UFC 162 Saturday.

“I think he went out there and was taunting him and doing certain things Anderson does once in awhile," Soares said. "There's a possibility he may have taken it too far this time. And unfortunately he wasn't able to walk away with the W.”

"You move left when you should have moved right, and your night can end. Unfortunately, Anderson has a tendency to walk on that tightrope of taking risks. It's part of the reason people like to watch him fight is because he takes those type of risks. Unfortunately, Saturday night didn't go his way.”

Silva, to varying extents, has used taunting as part of his offense, drawing opponents and making them throw wild strikes, allowing “The Spider” to sit back and counter.

However, “The All-American” refused to let any mind games get her off his game plan and eventually dropped the legendary Silva with a picture perfect left hook.

Soares also scoffed at any notion that the fight was rigged or pre-determined in any way, noting that Silva could’ve choose to talk to Weidman’s kneebar or heel hook submission attempts in the first round if he truly wanted to lose.

Weidman improved his record to 10-0, including seven finishes, and is now currently ranked the number 10 pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC’s official rankings.

The Long Island native has gone on record already stating that he’d like to rematch Silva this February in New Jersey, but the Brazilian said he wants to spend three or four months away from training and with his family before he decides his next fight.

Will Weidman vs. Silva II end up going down early next year or will Silva ultimately decide he truly no longer wants to fight for the title?
