Ex-PRIDE Champ Wanderlei Silva Slams UFC in Retirement Announcement

Former PRIDE sensation Wanderlei Silva says he’s hanging up the 4-ounce gloves for good, blaming the UFC for the decision.

“The Axe Murderer” went off on a 13-and-a-half minute tangent in a YouTube video he posted Friday evening.

"I am stepping down from the ring. After today, Wanderlei Silva will not fight again. My career is over. Because I don't have a stage to perform, where the athletes get the proper respect,” Silva said.

"They (the UFC) tried to turn my fans against me. My fans, who have followed me for 20 years, before this promotion even existed I was already fighting in Brazil. I have fought bare-knuckle and I helped building this sport.”

Silva’s career has been in limbo for months, beginning back in mid-June when it was revealed that the Brazilian knockout artist refused to take a random drug test administered by the Nevada State Athletic Commission on May 24.

The 38-year-old later admitted that he did take a banned diuretic to rehab a fractured right wrist he suffered back in February.

While Silva was removed from a scheduled UFC 175 grudge match with Chael Sonnen, his future remained uncertain as he was unlicensed at the time of the drug test refusal.

However, the situation became much more serious when The Nevada Attorney General’s Office filed a formal complaint against Silva for the indiscretion.

His attorney, Ross Goodman, filed a reply in support of a motion to dismiss the case against his client on Tuesday, but it appears that the response won’t matter in the long run.

Silva retires with a 3-2 record in his past five fights, where he alternated wins and losses since February 2010.

The legendary 49-fight veteran retires after a vintage knockout victory over Brian Stann at UFC on FUEL 8 last March.
