In the wake of Thiago Silva’s arrest last week, his ex-wife is finally making her voice heard on the matter.
Thaysa Kamiji, who has been divorced from Silva since December 2012, told Brazilian media outlet UOL that the eight-year marriage came to an end after repeated violent outbursts.
She said his recent actions were influenced by cocaine use, including threatening to murder Thaysa and her boyfriend Pablo Popovitch, a world-renowned Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt.
"That's what ended the marriage. The problem was cocaine. He always thinks he’s above the law,” Kamiji said in the interview.
“My neighbor knew that she should call the police if she ever heard me scream. He had the cocaine paranoia. He came to my house, tore my clothes and pointed a gun at my head. I already suffered some abuse, but I always withdrew because I was afraid."
Silva currently sits in Florida’s Broward County Jail on two counts of aggravated assault with a weapon, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and one count of resisting an officer without violence.
The light heavyweight knockout specialist allegedly went to Popovitch’s jiu-jitsu academy Thursday evening, threatening him and Kamiji with a gun.
After authorities were contacted, Silva fled to his home before he was detained by a SWAT team after a three-hour standoff.
After the full details of the arrest came to fruition, Silva was released from his UFC contract.
Silva’s attorney in the matter Scott Saul, told TMZ Sports police were “trigger-happy” and went “overboard” at his client’s home simply because he is an MMA fighter, not because anyone was in any immediate danger.
