Fabricio Werdum Anticipating Title Eliminator Bout with Travis Browne in March

Despite expecting to fight for the UFC heavyweight title in the first half of this year, an injury to champion Cain Velasquez has forced Fabricio Werdum to win one more fight.

“Vai Cavalo” told MMA Fighting on Wednesday that he is expecting to fight fellow top contender Travis Browne in a title eliminator bout in March.

"We don’t have a date 100 percent confirmed yet, but I believe it's going to be in March," Werdum said.

"I already know that it’s going to be a main event, so it's a five-round fight. He doesn’t have a good cardio, so that’s good for me. He's explosive when the fight starts, tries to finish it quickly, with jumping stuff and knockouts, so I see a lot of openings to defeat him."

Werdum, who comes in as the no. 2 heavyweight in the world according to the UFC’s official rankings, was unofficially named the next title challenger after a masterful armbar submission over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC on FUEL 10 in June.

While Werdum is regarded as one of the best submission specialists in the fight game today, the summer showdown marked just the second time “Big Nog” had ever been submitted in his 44-fight career.

Meanwhile, Browne enters the bout riding three straight “Knockout of the Night” performances over quality opposition over Gabriel Gonzaga, Alistair Overeem and most recently ex-UFC heavyweight champ Josh Barnett at UFC 168 late last month.

The only loss on the Greg Jackson’s MMA fighter’s resume is a knockout at the hands of former title challenger Antonio Silva at UFC on FX 5 in October 2012, though the loss should come with an asterisk since Browne tore his ACL just minutes into the fight.

Will Werdum’s superior submissions be too much for Browne or will the American’s unorthodox striking and underrated takedown defense be the difference maker in the matchup?
