UFC heavyweight contender Fabricio Werdum believes a win over fellow Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira should be enough to earn him a shot at the title.
In an interview with Pro MMA Now, “Vai Cavalo” made it very clear at what his intentions are:
"My focus now is Nogueira fight first. After I beat him, I know it's so difficult a fight, but I'm training a lot for this fight. After then, I don't' know who will be the owner of the belt. But, I want the belt,” he said.
“Maybe 'Bigfoot,' Dos Santos, Cain Velasquez, it don't matter, I want the belt."
Werdum posted a 3-1 record under the Strikeforce banner before decisively winning his return to the Octagon against Roy Nelson at UFC 143 in February of last year.
He followed up that performance with a brutal TKO over Mike Russow at UFC 147 in June.
His match up with “Big Nog” takes place at UFC on FUEL 10 on June 8 in their home country of Brazil.
Nogueira has alternated wins and losses in his past six fights, posting an even 3-3 record. His last fight came at UFC 153 in October, scoring “Submission of the Night” honors for his armbar of Dave Herman.
The two high level black belts are currently coaching opposite one another on the second season of “The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil.”
Werdum is currently ranked number two on the UFC’s official heavyweight rankings so a win over Nogueria could be the final push he needs, though it would be tough to deny the winner of Mark Hunt vs. Junior dos Santos at UFC 160 a shot at the heavyweight strap as well.
