Retired three-time UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen did not have to wait long for a second opportunity behind the broadcast booth.
“The American Gangster” was fired from the UFC/FOX position he had as an analyst in June, after failing two random drug tests in a three-week time frame, but ESPN felt Sonnen’s abilities were too good to overlook and hired him.
The Associated Press first reported Sonnen’s new gig on Tuesday.
"I love to break down fights," Sonnen told The Associated Press. "I love to watch them. The fact that ESPN will allow me to do that on the air in a fancy suit and call it a job, it's what I would be doing at home anyway."
"I had stubbed my toe pretty bad," Sonnen said. "I knew it, and I was willing just to take my medicine and go away. But when the phone call (from ESPN) came in, I was very quick to answer."
Sonnen has previously stated he won’t apologize for the drug testing fiasco, but nevertheless, ESPN senior coordinating producer Glen Jacobs stand behind the decision to bring Sonnen on board.
“We know Chael has made some mistakes in the past," Jacobs told the AP. "He's been honest. He's been up-front about it. He has paid for the mistakes that he has made, and he's moving forward.”
Jabobs also pointed to the insight Sonnen, a 44-fight veteran of the cage, could add to any given MMA card.
One of the most notorious personalities in MMA history, Sonnen announced his retirement from the sport in June, shortly before the Nevada State Athletic Commission hit him with a two-year suspension for the failed drug tests.
