Forrest Griffin: ‘I Was Fighting With One Arm the Last Three Years’

The original Ultimate Fighter hung up the gloves last July after a controversial decision win over Tito Ortiz at UFC 148 and based on a recent interview detailing all of his injuries, it looks like its going to stay that way.

Speaking to Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, the former UFC light heavyweight champion indicated that he is physically unable to train at this point.

"I physically can't (come back). I didn't want to be done, in the beginning. When I announced my retirement, that was actually when I was trying to come back and I realized, it just wasn't viable,” Griffin explained.

“… My shoulder is done. I brush my teeth with my left hand now. That's just the way it goes. I can't shoot a basketball, I can't throw any kind of ball. I was right handed. The last three years, I was kinda fighting with one arm, on and off … It's like, I'm going to work on whatever hurts the least today."

Griffin is widely credited for making the UFC mainstream with his action-packed bout with Stephan Bonnar during the original TUF Finale in April 2005.

Both competitors were inducted to the UFC Hall of Fame on July 6 of this year for their contributions to the company.

While never regarded as the best pure athlete in the cage, Griffin was a huge fan favorite due to his toughness, willingness to stand and trade and his underrated submission game.

Clearly, his brawling style took a toll on his body after 26 professional fights.

The 34-year-old retired with key victories over Chael Sonnen, Ortiz (twice), Bonnar (twice), Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Rich Franklin.
