UFC 167 continues to shape up as one of the best UFC pay-per-views in recent memory, easily looking like the best show 2013 has to offer on paper.
Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir is set to square off with ex-Strikeforce/K-1 titleholder Alistair Overeem at the event, set for November 16 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported the matchup on Thursday.
Mir is in the midst of the worst stretch of his career, losing three fights in a row between May 2012 and August 2013 and two of those bouts ended via TKO.
The high-level Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt remains on the UFC’s roster due to his longevity more than anything else: Mir has fought inside the Octagon 21 times during his over 12-year career, an unheard of feat for a heavyweight competitor.
Nevertheless, he is desperately in need of a win against “The Demolition Man.”
Overeem made his UFC debut on the strength of a 10-0-1 unbeaten streak and looked impressive scoring a round 1 TKO over former champ Brock Lesnar at UFC 141 in December 2011.
However, it was all downhill after that for the Dutch-British striker, who failed a pre-fight drug test for elevated levels of testosterone prior to a scheduled title fight with then-champ Junior dos Santos at UFC 160 in May of last year.
“The Reem’s” problems didn’t end there, as he has now suffered back-to-back knockouts at the hands of Antonio Silva and Travis Browne; even more disappointing is the fact that the hulking heavyweight was soundly winning both fights before getting put down.
Clearly, this is no exhibition match for Overeem either, as his recent track record shows he badly needs a “W” in this contest as well.
Will Mir’s limb snapping submissions be the difference maker in this one, or will Overeem’s vicious striking game make this a short contest?
