Former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi still wants a piece of middleweight contender Vitor Belfort and he’s certainly done his part to trying to entice “The Phenom” into taking the fight.
"I only want to fight guys that want to fight me and are willing to challenge themselves in the process,” Mousasi told MMA Junkie.
“If Vitor will do his job, then I will gladly face him at 185 pounds, 195 pounds or 205 pounds. I know both the fans and the UFC want this fight badly. If Vitor does not want to fight, then give me any No. 1 contender in the middleweight division."
Mousasi first called out the former UFC light heavyweight champion in June, looking to make his first appearance at 185 pounds since September 2008.
However, the hard-hitting Brazilian scoffed at the challenge, claiming “The Dreamcatcher” is not on his level.
After Chris Weidman defeated Anderson Silva for the middleweight strap at UFC 162 last month, Belfort basically demanded the next title shot from UFC President Dana White, but the UFC opted to go with a Weidman-Silva rematch for UFC 168 in December.
Additionally, Belfort recently declined a fight with Strikeforce import Tim Kennedy, with his manager stating the match up “doesn’t make sense.”
However, the member of the Blackzilian team in Boca Raton, Florida indicated he’d be open for match ups at light heavyweight, heavyweight or a catchweight as he waits for a second shot at the middleweight gold.
Clearly, Mousasi has compiled a 6-0-1 record in his past seven fights, winning a clear cut unanimous decision over Ilir Latifi in his UFC debut at UFC on FUEL 9 in April.
Would the fans be interested in seeing a light heavyweight scrap between Mousasi and Belfort before the end of the year?
