Former longtime UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is adamant that his current hiatus from the sport is largely based on his displeasure from the UFC’s drug testing policies.
Speaking on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour, GSP disputed recent claims made by UFC President Dana White that the French-Canadian superstar had ever voiced concerns about performance-enhancing drug abuse within the promotion.
"If you get caught on steroids right now, it’s because you’re very disorganized. It's so easy to beat the test. It's ridiculous,” St-Pierre told host Ariel Helwani.
"I cannot tell you the nature of the conversation, but I assure you, I said it,” he recalled regarding a behind-the-scenes conversation about PED’s with both White and UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta.
Furthermore, the Tristar Gym standout stressed that he should’ve taken a strong position on the subject sooner and would like to see random, independent organizations administrator drug tests to UFC fighters.
After a controversial win over now-current champ Johny Hendricks at UFC 167 in November, “Rush” told color commentator Joe Rogan h was strongly considering taking some time off.
About a month later, the French-Canadian superstar lived up to his word and decided to take a hiatus from the Octagon, vacating his belt in the process.
Hendricks captured the title when he defeated Robbie Lawler in a hard-fought decision at UFC 171 on Saturday.
“Bigg Rigg” has already expressed his desire for a second bout with St-Pierre, an idea GSP entertained when the two two-tier competitors briefly interacted on The MMA Hour.
“Stick around for a bit,” St-Pierre told Hendricks over the phone. “Keep the title and we’ll see what happens in the sport. If some things change maybe we’ll get together again.”
