Former longtime UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is likely not going to return to the Octagon this year, but the reason has nothing to do with his desire to fight.
“Rush” tweeted on Thursday night that he tore his left ACL in training and will need surgery to repair the injury.
“Tore my left ACL in training. Surgery in a few days. Rehab, pain, hard work, no shortcuts- I'll soon be back at 100%. Thanks for the support,” he wrote.
St-Pierre suffered a sprained left MCL back in October 2011, forcing him out of a scheduled title bout with Nick Diaz at UFC 137.
Anxious to get back into the cage, the French-Canadian superstar resumed training shortly thereafter and ended up tearing his right ACL in December 2011, leaving him on the shelf for another 11 months.
The Tristar Gym standout defeated Diaz at UFC 158 about one year ago, soundly outwrestling and outstriking the former Strikeforce champion over five rounds.
After scoring a controversial decision win over Johny Hendricks at UFC 167 in November, his 12 straight victory, St-Pierre told color commentator Joe Rogan he was likely going to take some time off since he was “going crazy.”
St-Pierre lived up to his word by announcing his hiatus from the sport a month later, vacating his title in the process.
The 32-year-old has yet to definitively state if resuming his fight career is in the cards or not.
