Glover Teixeira vs. Phil Davis Booked for UFC 179 in Brazil

Two of the UFC’s top light heavyweight fighters will separate contender from pretender in a late October showdown on pay-per-view.

Recent title challenger Glover Teixeira will fight perennial contender Phil Davis in front of his Brazilian countrymen at UFC 179 on October 27 to determine who remains relevant at 205 pounds, MMA Fighting reported on Friday.

Teixeira most recently came up short against champ Jon “Bones” Jones at UFC 172 in April, getting bloodied and bettered for the majority of their 25-minute matchup.

However, prior to the loss, the heavy-handed slugger had a rarely-seen 20-fight win streak going, including a 5-0 mark inside the Octagon.

After a loss to ex-champ Rashad Evans at UFC on FOX 2 in January 2012, “Mr. Wonderful” compiled a four-fight unbeaten streak – including a disputed decision win over Lyoto Machida in Brazil.

However, Davis got outstruck and simply outclassed when he went up with hulking knockout specialist at UFC 172 in April.

According to the UFC’s official rankings, Teixeira is the No. 4 light heavyweight in the world, while Davis cracks the list at No. 6.

The event takes place at the Maracanazinho gymnasium in Rio de Janeiro and is headlined by a featherweight title fight between Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes.
