Johny Hendricks: I Would Love to Retire at Middleweight

Upcoming UFC welterweight title challenger Johny Hendricks more than likely has plenty of good fights left in him at welterweight, but he wouldn’t mind bumping up to 185 pounds before he hangs up the gloves for good.

“Bigg Rigg” said as much during a fan chat sponsored by The Dallas News.

"Yes, once I can get through my weight class, I would love to retire at 185. I definitely don't want to go down a weight class," Hendricks said.

The Team Takedown standout is viewed by many fight fans as the uncrowned welterweight champion after taking the fight to longtime divisional kingpin Georges St-Pierre at UFC 167 in November.

While Hendricks landed the harder shots and refused to be held down on the mat, the judges still gave “Rush” the win via split decision.

Afterwards, GSP announced he would be taking a hiatus from the sport and stuck to his word by vacating the UFC welterweight championship days later.

Hendricks gets another opportunity to wear UFC gold when he fights Robbie Lawler for the vacant belt at UFC 171 on March 15.

Prior to the controversial loss to St-Pierre, Hendricks had won six in a row, including knockouts over top contenders Jon Fitch and Martin Kampmann.

He also defeated former interim champ Carlos Condit and ex-title challenger Josh Koscheck during that two-year span.

Hendricks openly admits that he walks around at about 220 pounds in between fights, but says he has no problem making the 170-pound welterweight limit with the help of dieting guru Mike Dolce.

Therefore, it’s hard to imagine Hendricks would be giving up much, if any, strength and power competing at 185 pounds.
