Johny Hendricks is arguably the best candidate for a title shot on the whole UFC roster, but instead it will be Nick Diaz challenging Georges St-Pierre for the welterweight strap at UFC 158 next month.
Needless to say, “Bigg Rigg” is not thrilled about the situation and went off on GSP in an appearance on MMA Mania’s “The Verbal Submission” podcast on Thursday.
"My reaction was like, 'Really?! You're an idiot.' He said that Condit really did beat Nick Diaz, know what I'm saying? He said, 'I'm fighting the true number one contender Carlos Condit,' and now, he's going backtracking and saying, 'Well, I think [Hendricks] lost.'”
“Who cares? You don't get to decide. He's not a judge. He's not a judge. He's a fighter. He's paid to fight and he's paid to fight me.”
Hendricks will still make the trip to Montreal, Quebec, Canada and fight on March 16, but instead of a title fight, he will take on Jake Ellenberger. The winner of this fight has a rock solid claim at the next title shot.
The bearded bruiser has rattled off five wins in a row, making quick work of perennial contenders Jon Fitch and Martin Kampmann, knocking them both out in the first round.
As Hendricks stated, Diaz is coming off a loss to Condit, which was for the interim welterweight title, at UFC 143 in February of last year.
Nevertheless, the UFC opted to go with the title fight that had a bigger personality and more name recognition. The fact that Nick Diaz and “Rush” legitimately do not like each other didn’t hurt the case, either.
Will Hendricks get his long-awaited title shot before the end of the year or will he be another fighter who sees a long winning streak go to waste?
