Jon Jones: UFC Announcing Gustafsson Rematch Prematurely was ‘a Bully Tactic’

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones isn’t happy with the way the UFC went about announcing his rematch with Alexander Gustafsson, saying they used a “a bully tactic” to make it happen.

“Bones” vented on the subject on Monday’s appearance on Ariel Helwani’s The MMA Hour.

"Originally, I just kind of identified it as being like a strong arm technique on their part. Get fans pushing for a fight prematurely," Jones said. "I hadn't even heard that date before...I thought it was unprofessional, a bully tactic."

“I knew that them announcing the fight early was to get fans harassing me, pretty much. I just had to never mind the masses and do what was best for me and my family."

Currently boasting an 11-fight win streak, Jones battled Gustafsson in a 25-minute classic at UFC 165 in September, getting beaten to the punch and bloodied in the early rounds.

While he rallied back in the fourth and fifth frames, many pundits felt “The Mauler” had done enough to snatch the title away from Jones.

However, all three Toronto judges believed otherwise, and ruled the close fight in favor of Jones.

Jones, who has since defeated Glover Teixeira and has showed an interest in a grudge match with Daniel Cormier, was offered a rematch with Gustafsson last month and received heavy criticism from fans after he took over a week to sign the bout agreement.

Eventually, everything worked out though and the part II is set for UFC 178 on September 27, once again in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Gustafsson has remained adamant that he will finish Jones if he ever signs on for a rematch, but only time will tell if his prediction is accurate or not.
