Jose Aldo Injured, Out of UFC 176 Rematch with Chad Mendes

A UFC featherweight title tilt between Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes at UFC 176 is off after “Scarface” suffered a shoulder and cervical spine injury.

UFC Tonight broke the news on Wednesday night, reporting that it remains up in the air if Mendes will remain on the card.

“UFC President Dana White confirmed with me that Jose Aldo is injured and is now out of his fight with Chad Mendes at UFC 176 at Los Angeles," Ariel Helwani said on the show. "There’s no word on a replacement yet.”

Aldo and Mendes first squared off at UFC 142 in January 2012, with the champ scoring a brutal round 1 knockout – the only loss of Mendes’ career.

Since then, “Money” has rattled off five straight victories (four knockouts), showcasing heavily improved striking under the tutelage of Muay Thai coach Duane “Bang” Ludwig.

Aldo, who has won 17 fights in a row, has decisively defeated worthy opposition in Frankie Edgar, Chan Sung Jung and Ricardo Lamas since his 2012 encounter with Mendes.

According to MMA Fighting, Team Nova Uniao, Aldo’s fight camp, said the champ suffered an injury after being taken down at practice on Tuesday.

The dangerous Brazilian striker is expected to be out of the gym for three weeks, but given that UFC 176 takes place on August 2, it would not make sense for Aldo to remain part of the card.
