UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo doesn’t believe Chad Mendes’ four straight knockout victories are enough to warrant enough championship fight.
“Scarface” told MMA Fighting that Mendes’ recent win streak doesn’t mean much since it was against inferior competition.
"Chad Mendes is still starting, haven’t fought anyone ranked yet, only fought guys that are not that good," Aldo said. "He’s coming off good wins, but he hasn’t beaten good guys. So I believe the next two should be Ricardo Lamas and Cub Swanson.”
While stoppages over Cody McKenzie and Yaotzin Meza aren’t going to raise any eyebrows, the Team Alpha Male standouts’ KOs of Darren Elkins and Clay Guida were equally impressive.
For the record, Guida, a former Strikeforce lightweight champion, was ranked the number 9 featherweight in the world when Mendes defeated him.
Mendes suffered the only loss of his career against Aldo at UFC 142 in January of last year, getting knocked out with a knee strike in the first round.
Meanwhile, Lamas has been patiently waiting on the sidelines for his shot at the belt ever since he scored a brutal and bloody TKO win over Erik Koch at UFC on FOX 6 in January.
The win was his fourth in a row, also taking out respected competitors Hatsu Hioki and Swanson during that time.
Swanson, a former WEC staple, has come back strong since the loss to Lamas, rattling off five wins in a row (including four knockouts).
Aldo gave Swanson the most embarrassing loss of his career at WEC 41 in July 2009, knocking the title challenger out in a mere eight seconds with a rarely-seen double flying knee.
The long-time divisional kingpin last defended his belt at UFC 163 last month, scoring a TKO stoppage in the fourth round over Chan-Sung Jung.
Aldo is currently riding a 16-fight win streak and has found few legitimate challenges outside of former lightweight titleholder Frankie Edgar during his nearly four-year title reign.
