Strikeforce/Pride veterans Josh Barnett and Alistair Overeem agree that a potential matchup between the two makes a lot of sense.
In an interview on Submission Radio, “The Demolition Man” expressed his interest in squaring off with Barnett.
“I believe Josh is ranked one place better than me,” Overeem said. “I also think the fight with Josh would be nice considering his long Japanese history, as well as mine.”
Barnett replied to the interview on Twitter, simply writing “Sweet.”
Overeem is coming off a dominant decision win over ex-UFC heavyweight champ Frank Mir at UFC 169 last month, breaking a two-fight losing streak (both knockouts).
Meanwhile, Barnett appeared to be a win or two away from a title shot before suffering a brutal knockout at the hands of Travis Browne at UFC 168 in December.
Overeem, a former Strikeforce champ, is known for his striking game, but has a very underappreciated submission game to boot (37 career wins: 15 knockouts, 19 submissions).
Meanwhile, Barnett is known for his crushing top pressure and slick submissions, but can pack a punch as well (33 career wins, 18 submissions, 10 knockouts).
According to the UFC’s official rankings, Barnett is the no. 5 heavyweight in the world and Overeem is right behind him at no. 6.
Will the UFC take notice and decide to add Barnett vs. Overeem to their late summer or early fall lineup?
