A former UFC heavyweight champion will square off with a surging contender this Memorial Day Weekend to determine who’s relevant in the current title picture.
Junior dos Santos is set to take on fellow heavy-handed striker Stipe Miocic as the co-headlining bout of UFC 173 on May 24, The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported on Monday evening.
JDS, who began his professional fight career with a rock solid 15-1 record (13 finishes), is just 1-2 in his past three bouts.
However, both losses came against current heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, who most recently battered his Brazilian counterpart at UFC 166 in October.
“Cigano” handed Velasquez the only loss of his career at their November 2011 encounter at UFC on FOX 1.
Meanwhile, his upcoming opponent, Stipe Miocic, has rattled off back-to-back wins over heavyweight staples Roy Nelson and Gabriel Gonzaga after suffering his only career loss to Stefan Struve at UFC on FUEL 5 in September 2012.
In 11 total career victories, Miocic has recorded eight finishes.
According to the UFC’s official heavyweight rankings, dos Santos is the no. 1 heavyweight contender in the world, while Struve cracks the list at no. 7.
Will JDS’ precise, hard-hitting boxing skills be too much for Miocic to handle or will his Croatian counterpart control the fight with his brutal leg kicks?
