A report from Canadian media outlet TSN on Wednesday stated that three-time UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen had a piece of his colon removed just one day before his UFC 167 bout with Rashad Evans last month.
The event took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, so it should come as no surprise that Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer wasted little time in weighing in on the situation.
"I checked with the UFC, they verified with Chael and his team that he did not have any surgery prior to the Rashad Evans fight,” Kizer told Deadspin.
“According to Chael, the interviewer asked him a question and Chael, coyly, didn't answer him directly as the article clearly states, and the interviewer inferred that the answer to his question was in the affirmative."
On Wednesday’s edition of UFC Tonight, Sonnen hinted there was some truth to the story, still choosing not to deny the report.
"My personal medical business is just that, personal," Sonnen said on the show. "I'm furious that they were given this information."
Fighters are routinely given a medical screening prior to a bout and it seems almost impossible to believe “The American Gangster” would have gotten clearance after such a serious medical procedure.
Michael Landsberg, the TSN reporter who broke the story, stands by his initial report judging by this tweet he sent out on Wednesday.
“He won't deny it, which to me is the same as admitting it. He just doesn't like to be seen as the excuse guy,” Landsberg wrote.
Will Sonnen ever elaborate on what actually happened on November 15 or will the fight fans forever be kept in the dark on the specific details?
