UFC Chairman/CEO Lorenzo Fertitta says their will be a featherweight championship bout in October – even if current titleholder Jose Aldo isn’t ready to go.
Speaking about the cancellation of UFC 176 on FOX Sports Live on Tuesday night, Fertitta said the company would consider an interim belt at 145 pounds if “Scarface” will still be on the shelf with a shoulder/spine injury in the mid-fall, per mixedmartialarts.com.
"Right now we have a date scheduled in Rio de Janeiro for October 27th. And we're looking at a couple of other location for earlier in October as well,” Fertitta said.
" … We've got some other great contenders in Frankie Edgar and Cub Swanson that certainly could step up and vie for some type of an interim title. We're going to know more in about two weeks.”
"Aldo was told by his doctors to not do anything for three weeks. We're about one week into that. We're going to regroup in two weeks, and if Aldo is not going to be ready to go by October, then we're going to have to sit down, and see if we can do an interim title."
Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes II was originally set to headline UFC 176 on August 2, but when injuries forced Aldo off the card, the event was formally cancelled on Tuesday – although the organization officially called the move a postponement.
Aldo, who boasts a 17-fight win streak and eight successful title defenses, has seen his career plagues with injuries in recent years.
Since January 2012, the first time Aldo fought Mendes, the Brazilian knockout artist has competed inside the Octagon just four times.
Since the knockout loss against Aldo, “Money” has won five straight bouts, four via knockout, and looks like he will be vying for the belt again in October regardless of the circumstances.
Edgar, a former UFC lightweight champ, has won two in a row since a loss to Aldo in February 2013.
Meanwhile Swanson, who suffered a brutal eight-second knockout to Aldo in June 2009, has rattled off six straight wins inside the Octagon January 2012 (four knockouts).
