Lyoto Machida vs. Gegard Mousasi Booked for Middleweight Clash in February

Ask and you shall receive, at least if you’re former Strikeforce and DREAM champion Gegard Mousasi.

Ex-UFC light heavyweight titleholder Lyoto Machida will take on Mousasi in a five-round bout, which will headline a February 8 event in Jaragua do Sol, Brazil. The UFC announced the bout on their website on Friday.

Machida is fresh off a big knockout win over perennial contender Mark Munoz at UFC Fight Night 30 last Saturday, his debut fight at 185 pounds.

Less than a full 24 hours after the victory, Mousasi, who hasn’t fought at 185 pounds since September 2008, called out “The Dragon” for a middleweight scrap.

Apparently, the UFC agreed with Mousasi that the matchup made sense, despite the fact that the Dutch striker, with a solid grappling game to boot, is ranked number 8 light heavyweight in the UFC’s official rankings.

Machida claimed the fifth spot in the company’s middleweight rankings with the win over Munoz, though he remains ranked as the 10th best fighter at 205 pounds.

Mousasi is currently riding a six-fight unbeaten streak, including clear-cut decision win over Ilir Latifi at UFC on FUEL 9 in April.

Meanwhile, Machida is the victor in three of his past four bouts, defeating the likes of Munoz, Ryan Bader and Dan Henderson.

Additionally, his split decision loss to Phil Davis at UFC 163 in August was universally panned by most fans, fighters and even UFC President Dana White, who tweeted he thought Machida definitely did enough to win.

Will Mousasi be able to break the notion that he can’t defeat top-tier competition or will Machida add another spectacular knockout to his highlight reel?
