Manager: I Wouldn’t Say Weidman Beat Silva, But He Won the Fight

Another day, another person trying to discredit UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman’s victory over Anderson Silva over UFC 168.

Silva’s manager, Ed Soares, told The Hollywood MMA Show on Tuesday that while “The All-American” had his hand raised over his star client last month, he didn’t truly beat him.

“Regardless, he won the fight. I wouldn't say he beat him, but he won the fight,” Soares told interviewer David Kano.

“He won the competition, and you know what, you have to congratulate him. What he's done nobody's ever been able to do. One of them is knockout Anderson Silva, and the other thing is beat Anderson Silva twice.”

Soares also went on to say that Weidman should be “respected” for finding a way to win in his long-awaited rematch with “The Spider.”

At UFC 168, Weidman controlled the action against Silva during the first round, dropping him with a short right hand from the clinch and delivering solid ground-and-pound – although Silva maintained an active guard and landed hard strikes off his back.

While Silva arguably looked to be gaining some rhythm with his striking in the second round, the Brazilian shattered his left shin when he threw a hard leg kick that was checked by Weidman.

Silva has went on the record stating that he will be back inside the Octagon, though he also says he is still eyeing a boxing match with fellow fight legend Roy Jones, Jr.

Controversy aside, Weidman is moving forward and is expected to defend his title against surging contender Vitor Belfort. The title bout is tentatively scheduled for Las Vegas in May.
