Surging welterweight contender Matt Brown will have his chance to take out a former Strikeforce champion before the year’s end, if all goes according to plan.
“The Immortal” will square off with the last reigning Strikeforce 170-pound titleholder, Tarec Saffiedine, sometime in December, according to MMA Junkie.
That leaves the possibility of three different events for the high-octane strikers to trade some leather on: UFC on FOX 9 (December 14), an unnamed UFC Fight Night event in Australia (December 21) or the company’s final event of 2013, UFC 168 (December 28).
Brown has seemingly overnight went from a barely mediocre fighter to being near the top of the short list of title contenders, winning six straight bouts (including five knockouts) between February 2012 and this August.
Despite looking like a tightly-contested bout on paper, Brown easily disposed of scrappy submission specialist Mike Pyle at UFC Fight Night 26 about two weeks ago, taking a mere 29-seconds to put his opponents’ lights out.
Nevertheless, he would likely face a stiff test in Saffiedine, who posted a 7-1 record in Strikeforce, capturing the welterweight strap from Nate Marquardt at the promotion’s final event in January.
While “Sponge” is known for his innovative striking, he is purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and has an underrated wrestling game from all his time spent training at Oregon’s famed Team Quest facility.
Saffiedine finished his Strikeforce career on the strength of four straight victories, so it’s feasible that the winner of this potential matchup could get a title shot against the winner of Georges St-Pierre vs. Johny Hendricks at UFC 167, set for November 16.
